VANITAS VANITATUM

The Continuo Collective spent the last year (Fall '08 through Spring '09) exploring the theme of Vanitas and other such notions of morality and mortality through the music of 17th Century Rome. We looked at works by Carissimi (Vanitas Vanitatum I & II), Landi, Cavalieri, Marazzoli, Mazzocchi Kapsberger and related pieces like the Ciaccona di Paradiso e Inferno. We also ornamented Psalm 48, using Conforti's falso bordonne setting, based on the improvised practice of the early Baroque.
Our Fall semester culminated in a Midtown Concerts performance on December 10, 2008, as well as a full concert version at St. Luke's Church on January 20, 2009.
Our Spring Semester featured a Midtown Concerts performance on April 22, two performances of the complete project at St. Luke's Church on May 18 & 19, as well as our fourth appearance as a fringe event at the Boston Early Music Festival in Gordon Chapel, Old South Church on June 11, 2009.
