L’Amour et La Folie
Love and Madness in the Air de Cour
L’Amour (Cupid) is boasting of his powers at the banquet of the gods, when La Folie (Madness/Folly) confronts the winged boy, claiming she is the more powerful. Their debate sparks a descent to earth, even to the Underworld, to find mortal lovers who have not been touched by madness or folly.
Based on a court ballet published in Gabriel Bataille’s fifth book of Airs de differents auteurs (Paris, 1614), this entertainment features airs de cour by Guédron, Boysset, du Baily, Vincent and others, accompanied by the Collective’s usual array of lutes, theorbos, gambas and guitars.
